Our next Council on Aging of Kent County meeting is Tuesday, April 27 at 8:30am.  Robbie from Addington Place will be our 5-minute presenter.  Our main program topic is "Technologies Evolving:  Telehealth Since COVID."  Our presenter is J. Josh Wilda, CIO at Metro Health - University of Michigan Health. TOPIC: Caregivers; Challenges, insight, perspectives on how we, as service providers, can provide supports for aging adults. Both Carol and Cheryl have been caregivers and will share their stories. Cheryl is the author of “Taking Care of Miss Bee Bee”.

She has a well-known reputation for assisting her clients through every step of the real estate transaction. Her extensive knowledge of the housing market and willingness to help in a hands-on way leaves her customers feeling not just content, but relieved. Certain aspects having to do with real estate can feel daunting. Beth uses clear and frequent communication to ensure her clients feel the opposite.

Subsidized Housing? Community Living, everyone’s rights? Suppliers? How is it regulated for quality and safety?

Mysty Eves brings over a decade worth of knowledge and experience to the cannabis industry. Currently, Ms. Eves is a patient advocate with special attention and activism for pediatrics and veteran care, wellness and accessibility. Her pediatric research and advocacy, particularly within the realm of Epilepsy and Autism, was further ignited when her youngest child was diagnosed with a form of Epilepsy. Mysty continues to influence the cannabis political and educational landscape by being a board member of the West Michigan Cannabis Guild. She is also the Chair of the Endorsement Committee and also serves on the fundraising, ordinance and expungement committees of the guild. Her vast involvement in the political and legal aspects of the industry prompted Ms. Eves to run for city appointment earlier this year, in the City Of Grandville, Michigan and anticipates continuing her political and educational endeavors.

This months presentation will be from Safe Haven Ministries. Tara Aday will discuss how to navigate elder abuse from the professional and personal side. She will discuss recognizing elder abuse and practical tips on how to initiate the conversation for those you suspect are being abused, and more.

Travis Earley is a Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Kent County. He will give an overview on the vulnerable adult abuse law in Michigan; both financial exploitation and physical abuse, as well as some other scams we see in this area.

We will have plenty of time for networking so be sure to bring your business cards and any current flyers you would like to share. There will be a space to put your flyers out - just be sure to take any extras with you when you leave!

The Topic: AARP and Western Michigan University embarked on a 9-month study to discover the health disparities that exist in the State of Michigan. Jennifer Feuerstein will share the key findings of the study; what the recommended calls to action are to reduce these disparities; and how a new law on tele-health will change the future of health care.
Jennifer Feuerstein is a community organizer, activist, public speaker, and writer on issues related to older adults. She is the Associate State Director for AARP Michigan and a Crew Member for WOTV 4 as the on-air expert for the "encore years". Her work involves helping older adults live their best lives and advocating on their behalf. She travels across the state of Michigan engaging the 1.4 million AARP members to help them to age well and not fear being part of the 50+ club.

Jayson L. Dibble, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at Hope College, Holland, Mich. He teaches about and researches relationship communication, persuasion, social science research methods, and humor. His research has been featured in various outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, TIME, and The Washington Post, and he has long been involved with Gilda's LaughFest, where he speaks about humor and health.

We will then hear from Laura Foerster (Certified Long Term Care Ombudsman) and Kaye Scholle, (MSW Certified Long Term Care Ombudsman) who will provide an overview of their role in advocating for residents primarily in Long Term Care facilities with a focus to improve the Long Term Care system, speaking for passage of laws, regulations and policies.

Annette Crocker RN has been a nurse for 30 years. She has an extensive critical care nursing background. Since 2010 she has been the Practice Manager at Michigan Holistic Health. The focus of the practice is Cannabis education and qualifying patients for the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program. Annette is a member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association. She is also a board member and treasurer for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws in Michigan. She opened My Hemp Solutions in October 2017. MHS is a retail and educational space for Hemp CBD.

Dr. Crocker is the owner and operator of Michigan Holistic Health since 2009. He is a Board Certified Interventional Radiologist with a history of pain management and palliative care. He sits on Michigan’s Medical Marijuana Review Panel for new qualifying conditions and is a board member for the Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. He has served as a medical marijuana expert in several court cases in Michigan and Illinois and has lectured extensively to medical professionals, community leaders and patient groups. He recently created his own product line of Hemp CBD products.
